With her new album,‘Independent,’ just launched, the inimitable Bashiyra hits Hideaway with her mesmerizing vocals blending influences from both classic and neo-soul, jazz, reggae and soulful house.
Bashiyra began her career working as a backing vocalist for artists ranging from Queen and Michael Bolton, to the legendary Patti Labelle and Diana Ross. In 2009 she released her debut album, ‘Thought You Knew’, a balanced mix of neo-soul, jazz and dance harnessed by her rich, soulful and emotive voice. This successful self-release led to BASHIYRA receiving “The Soul Baby Live Award 2011” and in the same year, Black Women in the Arts awarded her "The Nina Simone Award" for her outstanding work in the area of jazz.
Her second album 'One Shot At Love’ (released in 2013 on Expansion Records) reached number five in the UK Soul Charts.
Bashiyra’s latest release ‘Independent’ (out July 2018) sees this UK soul diva evolving both as an artist but also as a songwriter and producer sharing credits on the album with Herb Middleton (whose production credits also include Teddy Pendergrass, Mary J Blige and Phyllis Hyman) and PE Productions (LA Reid).
Bashiyra’s co-writers include Crystal Johnson (who has written for Mariah Carey, Jennifer Hudson, Anthony Hamilton and Angie Stone) and Richard Rudolph (who co-wrote the Minnie Riperton classic ‘Lovin’ You’).
