Chris Royal on The Voice UK
The daughter of Leslie George "Jiver" Hutchinson a Jamaican trumpeter who moved to England in the '30s, Elaine Delmar had wide extending roots and branches in the british jazz scene.
Elaine's more recent recordings 'Wonderful', 'Nobody Else But Me' and 'But Beautiful' have all featured Brian Dee, the much-respected jazz pianist and accompanist with whom Elaine has been working for the past 20 years.
In the late 70's Elaine played the part of the Bohemian Princess in Ken Russell's film Mahler, the film biography of Gustav Mahler. In 1983 she appeared at London's National Theatre in David Hare's highly acclaimed play, Map of the World.
Her pure vocals have won plaudits from the press and fellow musicians and have led to her being invited to perform with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in 2010.
“Among the multitude of good jazz singers in Britain today, there is not one who can surpass Elaine Delmar. Few understand the repertoire as well as well or express it with such dynamic simplicity. When she sings a song as plainly as she can it still emerges gently swinging, imbued with the spirit of jazz. She builds each performance with sure- footed musicianship ” Sunday Observer
"Fashions may change but quality is timeless, which explains how the stylish Elaine Delmar has survived the passage of so many vocal trends over the years. A favourite with both jazz and cabaret audiences, she continues to set the standard for sophisticated rich-toned interpretations of the Great American Songbook". London Evening Standard
