Julia Biel

Julia Biel - vox/piano/electric/guitar

Idris Rahman - reeds

Marco Piccioni - electric guitar

Julia Biel is one of the jewels of the UK music scene – a one-time member of the F-IRE Collective, guest vocalist with the likes of Ben Watt (legendary musician/ producer behind Everything But the Girl) and left-field post-jazz experimentalists Polar Bear, as well as lead vocalist with fêted afrobeat/reggae/dub outfit Soothsayers, her own music has seen her compared to the likes of Bjork, Norah Jones, Thom Yorke and Rickie Lee Jones.

A former winner of the Perrier Jazz Vocalist of the Year award, her self-produced debut album, Not Alone, garnered extravagant critical praise and led to extensive UK-wide touring, a featured appearance in a Nokia ad campaign and a BBC Jazz Award nomination in the ‘Rising Star’ category.

Largely co-written with folk-jazz guitarist Jonny Phillips (Oriole), Not Alone was a bewitching confection of cool ballads, folk songs and even a little laid-back rootsy hip hop. Now, Biel is putting the finishing touches to her new self-penned record, this time sharing production duties with Idris Rahman (Soothsayers). The album nods to Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Portishead and Bjork as much as to Nina Simone and Billie Holiday and this date offers a rare chance to catch up with Biel live in an intimate setting. Expect songs of melancholic innocence from her new project alongside the sublime jazz-folk material of her debut.

“a voice of supreme subtlety and honeyed depth. Her mesmerizing voice and magnetic stage presence should encourage many to follow where she leads… about to hit the big time.” The Guardian

“not quite pop, not quite jazz, Julia Biel hovers in her own stratosphere” BBC Online

“soulful, expressive and subtle, Julia Biel is a jazz star on the rise” The Guardian

Her voice shares some of the dreamy, caramel-dripped quality that made Norah Jones’s tones so instantly beguiling” The Independent

“the highly original Julia Biel mixes world folk, soul and roots” Jazzwise

“Blessed with an expressive, beautiful voice, part Rickie Lee Jones and part Bjork, her debut album is a seductive affair” TimeOut

”The real Biel… she’s content to let melody and lyrics do the talking for her. Not only is her voice warm and natural, but nothing sounds forced and she’s convincing. Which, of course, is a sure sign of genuine talent.” The Observer

Jasper Hoiby - bass

(Phronesis, Ivo Neame, John Parricelli, Jim Hart, Mark Lockheart, Tom Arthurs)

Høiby’s rich sound, liquid phrasing and pin-sharp rhythmic feel underpin the whole thing..” The Guardian

Sebastian Rochford - drums

(Polar Bear, Acoustic Ladyland, Andy Sheppard, Yoko Ono, Brian Eno, Herbie Hancock, Stan Tracey, Ingrid Laubrock)

Seb Rochford now sounds like the best new percussionist on the UK scene since Mark Mondesir” The Guardian

Testimonials

Thanks to everybody for making Friday night truly special. It was our 11th time at Hideaway and though the other ten were good this was the best yet. Everything seemed close to perfection. The music - Wayne was phenomenal, as were his musicians. The food was superb, the service was exceptional (a special thanks to the waiting staff who managed to weave their way through the dancers without causing problems). The sound was fantastic, and the audience played their part too! I have been gigging for 40 years and realise that nights like Friday don’t come very often.
