With a broad repertoire that draws from the libraries of Buddy Rich, Benny Carter, Charles Mingus, Basie, Ellington and more as well as performing fresh and exciting new material from Andy and other leading UK composers/arrangers, there really is no better way to spend a cold Sunday afternoon in February than in the warm and friendly surroundings of South London's premier Jazz venue in the company of The Andy Mears Orchestra.
In addition to running the Orchestra, Andy has an Octet, for which he writes extensively and which features some of the finest jazz talent the UK has to offer and it was with this group that Andy recorded his first CD as a leader, Eight plus One. It subsequently received a number of radio appearances and favourable reviews, notably from the late, great Humphrey Lyttelton, who described Andy and his ensemble as "Auspicious".
Guest Vocalist with the Orchestra this afternoon is highly sought after vocalist and recording artist, Gemma Nelson.
Gemma’s first major breakthrough came in 1998 after performing alongside legendary American Soul-Singer Jimmy Ruffin.
Since then she has toured all over the world working with artists such as Kool & the Gang, Neil Cowley, The Royal Air Force Squadronaires and many more.
