Andrew Ashong brings his blend of fresh, soulful music back to Hideaway. Transmitting his sweet, deep grooves alongside his live band, this will be a truly memorable live two set performance from the acclaimed London-Ghanaian musician.
"It's soul music for people who have been dismayed by most of the major developments in soul music of the last two, even three, decades." The Guardian
“Ashong… chooses to retrospectively immerse in the ethics of true music.” Clash
If you follow soul, funk and jazz music to any extent at all then there is little doubt you will have heard the track ‘Flowers’ that Ashong released back in 2013 with fellow creative mastermind Theo Parrish on the Detroit producer’s Sound Signature label. Winning ‘Track of the Year’ at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards 2013 - this funky title track could be heard across most of the festival circuits that summer and quickly became a people’s favourite.
When asked, what is behind the excitement of this record, Theo Parrish said “The Funk. Right under my nose were all the essential elements: simplicity, drive, and honesty gained from heartfelt experience in Andrew Ashong’s music. It’s more than just that. It’s human.”
Coming to song writing from a DJ background, playing vinyl remains a key part of Andrew's musical make-up and his DJ sets are as full of flair and creativity as his live shows and have demonstrated to many a joyous crowd member the range in his influences, both past and present, accumulated during his teenage years crate-digging for classic disco, funk and soul vinyl in charity shops, and listening to his older brother's Ayers, Herbie Hancock and Talking Loud Records collection.
Andrew Ashong manages to demonstrate seamless flair with his performances, combining a mixture of styles and tastes that merge together into a uniquely captivating show, making this a Hideaway event not to be missed!
