Imaani

Imaani credits the legendary Jocelyn Brown with introducing her to the music business and nurturing her talent at an early age. Since then she has never looked back and has performed worldwide on TV, in the studio and live with such artists as Nile Rodgers, Chaka Khan, Jimmy Cliff, Maceo Parker, UB40, Betty Wright and, of course, Incognito. Her emotive lead vocals can be heard on the classic Urban Species album “Blanket”, and on no fewer than 10 Incognito albums since the late Nineties, leading to her becoming a firm favourite of the band’s fans in the process. She wrote and sang the track ‘Rapture’ on the most recent Incognito album “Amplfied Soul”, which went to No 1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. The band’s founder Bluey describes her as “possessing one of the most wonderful and memorable voices to grace an Incognito album”. Other UK bands with whom she has guested on record in recent years include Reel People and Down To The Bone. For some of her fans she is best known as a former UK entrant in the Eurovision Song Contest. She has the kudos of being the 1998 UK entry with “Where Are You” - a UK Top 20 hit - which came second in the final, a result which has not been bettered by any UK entrant since. At the time she was interviewed by a young journalist named Boris Johnson who, in a major feature for the Daily Telegraph, described her as having a voice “like molten Toblerone”. He went on to say: “Imaani is an idealist. She is proud to be the first black British Eurovision entrant. She wants Europe to come together through the ‘joy of music’”. Originally from Derby, but based in London for many years, Imaani has also enjoyed success in the dance arena, charting in the Top 20 with “Freak Like Me” fronting garage act Tru Faith & Dub Conspiracy, recording No 1 soulful house tracks ‘Found my Light’ and ‘Live without Love’ in her own right and working with The Layabouts on their ‘Future Retro’ album. As well as this hyper activity on so many fronts, Imaani has been able to enjoy performing solo with her own band, primarily in the London area. And now she has finally decided that the time is right to record her debut solo album, working with producer/songwriter Kevin Leo. Cheekily titling the album “Standing Tall”, the 4ft 11inch Imaani is an artist who embraces a number of genres. The album reflects all the styles of music that she loves and combines them with strong hooks, soulful melodies and distinctive production. Opening track “Ten Thousand” features members of the Incognito horns, “Standing Tall” is a barnstorming rock-tinged funk track with searing vocals, and among the heartfelt ballads - at which Imaani truly excels - are the beautiful “Let’s Do It Right” and “Sorry I Am”.
