MORNINGTON LOCKETT

MORNINGTON LOCKETT is now well established as one of the great British tenor sax players. After working with the Ronnie Scott quintet for almost three years he went on to be featured on numerous sessions and gigs. Perhaps best known for his work with singer Sarah Jane Morris and the Tracey’s, Stan and Clark, he is also the featured sax player on drummer Martin
Drew’s cd tribute to the late Ronnie Scott, as well as the driving force behind the remarkable “Celebrating the Jazz Couriers” quintet. He has a powerful and hugely impressive sound and approach, and this is always a great gig. “Lockett..plays with tremendous fluency and drive” Evening Standard; “World class” Jazz Journal; “inspired” Jazzwise Magazine

My Initial thoughts on my first visit to Hideaway's M. L. gig

What a terrific venue !

Great sound - every instrument clearly heard, without being resonant or boomy. The PA system was really excellent.

Mornington Lockett & the guys were fab, as usual.

A good stage, well lit & the right height, and I can’t wait to hear that gorgeous piano!

A really nice dining room area - very roomy, well laid out, just sufficient lighting over the tables.

Food looked excellent & well presented (I had eaten before coming).

Staff were efficient & friendly, and created a good atmosphere, good vibes.

I loved the bar area, AND the glass partitions… a really good innovative idea to create a ‘quiet ’ area but still with the visual link to the music.

A very good selection of draught & bottled beers & wines that would put many places to shame.

The Hideaway Club has all the qualities to make it a success. As a new venue it will obviously take a little time to create its own history, with its own character. That is where that the undefinable thing called ‘the human touch’ comes in. The elements that give a place its personality. These are very early days, and it is still wintertime, but word gets around quickly !

Congratulations to Frances & everyone concerned for all your hard work in turning the snooker halls into a South London showpiece night club with STYLE !

Martin Gowar.
